adding to my already long list of reasons for being deathly afraid of marriage!

"but it should be for pleasure, not obligation," sums this film up quite perfectly. it has a full ~5 hour televised version which i'll 100% be checking out, though i know for a fact it'll leave me ten times more solemn than the theatrical cut did. if you enjoyed marriage story (2019), i'd recommend this too!

i cannoooot wait to watch more of bergman's work.

might've been the longest 2 hours of my life. i had a grimace on my face for pretty much the entire runtime.

i don't know how to rate this, so i'll be sticking with 2.5 stars for the acting + cinematography alone. david thewlis was great and the gritty settings were perfect for the story. it was just a total drag (purposefully) to get through, and i have mixed feelings about it.

absolutely everybody pissed me off. johnny is an insufferable, despicable asshole. each time he went on his philosophical rambles, my patience grew thinner and thinner. don't get me started with jeremy. he's just a living, breathing sack of shit.

i'm glad that the film didn't do anything in an attempt to excuse johnny's actions, but i'll always feel iffy about the subject matter. the rape scenes were graphic and there were way too many for my liking. i wish it was handled with more tact, but i guess that was the point - to be raw and abrasive and vile.

sandra's "why do you feel the need to take the piss?" took me out, but apart from that i think the only thing i really liked was the closing scene. achilies' heel reference? question mark?

forcing myself to get through my priority watchlist...

this is my kind of "literally me" movie. it might be a new favourite, but i'll have to think about it for a little longer!

overall, i found it super charming and, at times, painfully relatable. i could see parts of myself in both mariana and martin, and i still can't tell if i love or hate that.

something i really fucking appreciated was how the film never tried to "fix" them to make them the picture-perfect partner. throughout the entire film, they stayed true to themselves: neurotic, awkward, and human!!!!

i also need martin's ipod. he has over 8000 songs saved. i just know that man's music taste is immaculate.

director : jean-luc godard

genre : drama

this is my first godard film! woohoo!

in terms of how it was shot, it was gorgeous. i can see why his work is so influential! i had to mull over the story for a bit cause, to be honest, i didn't feel that moved by the ending. it was a little too abrupt for me, but it was tragic.

nana's views are quite existentialist, but her freedom gradually gets more and more constrained as the story goes on. she was already constrainted from the beginning, economically speaking. sure, she says that she's responsible for her own actions, but the system she's in strips her of her autonomy. she's a woman and, unfortunately, has no freedom in a world operated by men!

typing this made me realise just how ironic the movie title is :-(
also, anna karina is a siiight to behold.

it was alright!

definitely more gory than i'd anticipated. i enjoyed the pacing and cinematography, but i feel like i need to read the book to comprehend the entire story a lil better. i really liked how the horror genre elements got stronger as the story progressed though! "kiri kiri kiri kiri kiri," is probably going to be stuck in my head for a while.
